ABOUT SPEKE

Unlike many Liverpool suburbs that were consumed by the city’s organic urban sprawl, the lowly populated village that was olden days Speke had its land purchased for housing development by Liverpool council.

This housing was needed due to economic growth driven by industry. In 1932 500 people lived here. By 1960 there were 25,000 new residents. One of whom was a Mr. George Harrison.

The area’s remoteness meant it was ideal as a location for an airport to serve this burgeoning population. It opened in 1920 and was soon the UK’s second busiest airport. By the 1950s due to governmental aviation changes, the airport’s traffic declined and it closed. The oldest surviving aircraft hangar in the country is now a leisure centre.

The Mersey Wave
The northeast has The Angel Of The North. The northwest has the even taller Mersey Wave. Artist Peter Fink created this 100ft tall, 200ft wide sculpture of 12 aluminium fins as a tribute to the area’s maritime past.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport
Speke Hall (see below) had vast, expansive grounds on the outskirts of Liverpool. It was here that the original Speke airport began accepting air traffic in 1930. Back then it was an airline called Imperial Airways that flew to Liverpool.

Expansion continued into the 1930s and the airport was busy up to the 1950s as the UK’s second most used. Aviation changes by the government led to decline. Eventually a new airport was needed, the old terminal building was discarded and by 2001 this new airport was renamed after the city’s famous musician, John Lennon.

Speke Hall
Now this is what we think of when we imagine English history. One of the finest examples of wattle-and-daub Tudor architecture, this wooden framed, palatial manor house is truly stunning.

There is much to enjoy in the hall. The Home Farm structure has been adapted to become home of the restaurant, shop and reception area. The dairy houses informative display material.

In the laundry you will find an educational room. There is a sense that too much conversion has taken place and this Grade I listed building has seen some of this clawed back with the gun room restored to its former state. The well preserved gardens and courtyard are also well worth a visit.

Speke and it’s nearby, calming, unspoilt natural habitat should be experienced by all.  And if you wish to adventure even further out, Old Swan, Sefton, Macclesfield and St. Helen’s are all accessible with our minibus and coach hire.
